JOURNALISTIC HERITAGE OF NESTOR NYZHANKIVSKYI (UNDER THE PEN NAME OTSEN R.)

Abstract

The paper explores little-known press materials by Nestor Nyzhankivskyi that contain valuable source study material representing the cultural and artistic events in Eastern Galicia in the first half of the 20th century. The aim is to conduct a cultural and musicological analysis of Nestor Nyzhankivskyi’s press materials under the pen name Otsen R., to outline the genre range of newspaper reports by this Galician artist, and to describe their communication impact on the social environment of the time. The research methodology is based on a combination of methods of empirical and theoretical levels of scientific knowledge of the sociocultural reality of Eastern Galicia. In particular, the following methods were employed: historical and chronological method – to reveal the stages of development of the cultural and educational life in Eastern Galicia in the first half of the 20th century; content analysis – to describe the topics and content of little-known newspaper reports by N. Nyzhankivskyi; descriptive method – to consider the fact-based materials in the journalist’s press materials; biographical method – to cover the life and creative work aspects of prominent Ukrainian musicians; classification and typology – to outline the genre features of N. Nyzhankivskyi’s music criticism reports published under the pen name Otsen R. The academic novelty of the paper lies in the fact that for the first time, little-known newspaper reports in the Dilo periodical are introduced into scholarly discourse, and the socio-cultural events in Eastern Galicia are described through publications under the pseudonym Otsen R., which reflect the region’s progress towards the establishment of the foundations of professional Ukrainian art. Based on the scientific analysis, the following conclusions were drawn: the journalistic materials by Nestor Nyzhankivskyi under the pen name Otsen R. are valuable cultural materials that record the arduous path of Galician citizens to shaping the national artistic worldview; newspaper reviews of cultural and educational events in Lviv and cities in the Eastern Galician region represented the establishment of Ukrainian culture during the historical period of statelessness.
