THE ROLE OF PERSONAL RESOURCES IN THE PROCESS OF RESOCIALIZATION OF FORCED MIGRANTS

Abstract

The article examines the role of personal resources in the process of resocialization of forced migrants. The fullscale war has caused unprecedented waves of internal and external migration of Ukrainians, destroying social ties and complicating access to housing, employment, and essential services. Against this backdrop, resocialization emerges as a key dimension of social policy – the restoration of individuals’ capacity for interaction, self-identification, and active participation in host communities, despite traumatic experiences and limited resources in host environments. The purpose of the article is to theoretically substantiate the role of personal resources in the resocialization of forced migrants and to clarify the conditions for their effective integration. The study applies a theoretical and analytical synthesis of approaches in social work, sociology, and psychology; generalizes empirical data on wartime migration; and employs structural-functional analysis of institutional support mechanisms along with the principles of trauma-informed practice. Resocialization is conceptualized as a multi-stage process – from the desocialization of obsolete roles to the acquisition of new norms and the formation of renewed identity and social connections. The central mechanism is represented by personal resources such as motivational resilience, reflexivity, emotional self-regulation, social competence, flexibility, and self-efficacy. The article substantiates the advantages of the integrative acculturation strategy, which combines the preservation of cultural identity with participation in the institutions of the host country. The necessity of trauma-informed psychosocial interventions, language training, recognition of qualifications, and career guidance to reduce “secondary vulnerability” is emphasized. The author concludes that social work functions as a bridge between the individual, the community, and institutions through case management, intersectoral collaboration, and community-based approaches. Effective programs should combine individual support with the development of local services, digital formats of assistance, and reintegration packages for potential returnees. Building intercultural competence among migrants and professionals, along with stable mechanisms for financing the “social route” of a migrant, are key to sustainable integration and social cohesion.
