Abstract

This article explains the reasons why understanding human motivation is important and well worth the time spent on learning to increase it. It lists many benefits of healthy motivation and distinguishes the types of motivation that are more effective in dealing with our complex and rapidly changing environment. Personality has been found to affect the manner in which persons are willing to be affected by motivation strategies as proposed and or implemented by management. More specifically, studies have affirmed that persons with emotional stability and those who rank low on the psychoticism are more willing to be receptive to motivation techniques Jaeggi. On the other hand, persons with more aggressive personalities tend to be resistant to management even on things that are beneficial to them. For instance, when management finds that the staffs can be well motivated by inducing job rotation program, some workers may resist this viewing it as a means to allow ‘outsiders’ to their roles. According to the research of Dr Anders Ericsson, and as Jim Taylor, PhD, writes in Psychology Today, motivation is the most significant predictor of success, and success is achieved through high performance. By understanding what motivates you to do better, you will naturally be a better worker and climb up the career ladder faster, or reach your personal goals. In a recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Cornell University researchers Kaitlin Woolley and Ayelet Fishbach found that ‘giving people an immediate bonus for working on a task, rather than waiting until the end of the task to reward them, increased their interest and enjoyment in the task’. So, if you want to be successful, competent, creative, and talented, and if you want to change for the better and boost your engagement with life and your personal goals, then you should focus on improving your motivation. You will start to notice that motivation also helps you become more adaptable, productive, and happy in the face of adversity and stress.
