CANISTHERAPY IN SOCIAL WORK: AN INNOVATIVE RESOURCE FOR SUPPORTING VULNERABLE GROUPS

Abstract

The article examines canistherapy as an innovative form of socio-psychological support that is gaining particular relevance in the context of martial law, widespread psychological trauma among the population, and growing psychosocial challenges in Ukraine. This method of therapeutic interaction between humans and dogs is considered an effective tool for providing emotional support, stabilizing the psycho-emotional state, and improving the quality of life for vulnerable population groups. Special attention is given to work with children with disabilities, individuals who have experienced traumatic events and exhibit symptoms of PTSD, the elderly, as well as persons facing social isolation or other special needs. The article analyzes the current state of canistherapy implementation within the national system of social work, outlines the key barriers, and highlights the prospects for further development of this field in the Ukrainian context. It presents the experience of implementing an educational project for training specialists in animal-assisted therapy, initiated and supported by the Kennel Union of Ukraine in cooperation with the NGO “One Heart for Two” and partner organizations. The training program includes both theoretical foundations and practical components, taking into account ethical standards, safety requirements, and the specifics of working with various target groups. The program culminates in specialist certification, ensuring the preparation of qualified personnel for the professional application of the method. In conclusion, the article emphasizes the importance of an interdisciplinary approach to organizing canistherapy activities, the need to develop scientifically grounded methodological frameworks for its implementation, and outlines directions for further research in the field of animal-assisted therapy as a promising tool for socio-psychological support in times of crisis.reflection, and outlines prospects for further research in the field of canistherapy.
